Swimwear – Function or Looks?

One of the things you may want to consider when shopping for new swimwear is whether or not it is functional depending on why you are buying it in the first place. Are you buying new swimwear to look good on the beach or are you buying new swimwear because you are a serious swimmer who wants to get the most advantage from their swimsuit? There is a good chance that you are somewhere in between. You want to look good on the beach for your next Summer holiday but you also want your swimsuit to perform well in the water and not let you down when you are crashing through the surf. If you know what I mean. We have all seen the pictures of celebrities caught on camera as the pull up their bikini tops after being caught unawares by an ocean wave.

The reason I say that there is a good chance of being somewhere in the middle is that in the UK swimming is a very popular form of exercise as well as great fun. Approximately 12 million people go swimming on a regular basis. Not all of them are Olympic gold medal contenders but a lot of them do recognise swimming as being a great way to keep fit and healthy. You can get a great workout in the pool while at the same time not putting too much strain on your body because the water itself gives you lots of support.

So, if 12 million people go swimming regularly but not all of them are serious competitive swimmers, then there must be a lot of people who enjoy going swimming just for the fun as well as getting a little exercise. These same people are likely to use their swimwear for more than going to the local pool. They are likely to take their swimwear on holiday as well so it has to look good out of the pool as well as perform well in it.

There are some particular swimwear brands who have realised that there is a market to cater for in this area and they produce swimwear that is functional as well as great looking. Brands such as Seafolly from Australia are right on the mark with a lot of their designs as are some others such as Banana Moon and Moontide. They are all creating swimwear that will turn heads on the beach as you walk past but that also have a bit of the athlete in mind for when you want to take the plunge.

By the way, if you are a lover of the gym for keeping fit, have you ever considered that the above is also true the other way around? Why not consider a fantastic looking bikini top rather than a sports bra for your workout as this will also be great in the steam room, sauna and pool afterwards.
